The Rouse is a redesign of a classic book that has been banned for its subversive ideas.
This handcrafted book was created in an effort to pushback against a misogynistic society and to showcase feminism.
To me, the premises of The Awakening include reclaiming female sexuality and being an independent woman. Pink is a color that society connects to females, and because of this fact, I decided to use it as the focal color throughout this book. The black and white images with pink highlights that are noticed while flipping through were used to connect modern feminist issues with those present in the nineteenth century.
The Rouse was featured at the Chico Art Center for the CONFLUENCE art show from May 5-26, 2017. Works of digital media and design students from local community college, Butte College and California State University, Chico were showcased.
